Inhomogeneous broadening
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005854
The broadening of spectral lines or bands due to a distribution of different local environments or states for the absorbing or emitting species within a sample. This results in a range of slightly different transition energies, which collectively contribute to the observed spectral width. Examples include broadening due to crystal defects or variations in solvent polarity.
