Wavenumber in vacuum

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012658

The reciprocal of the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation as it propagates through a perfect vacuum, representing the number of waves per unit length. This is a fundamental spectroscopic quantity, directly proportional to the energy of the photon. It is commonly expressed in units of reciprocal centimeters (cm⁻¹).
