Doppler broadening
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003388
The widening of spectral lines caused by the random thermal motion of atoms or molecules emitting or absorbing radiation. Particles moving towards or away from the observer experience a shift in the observed frequency due to the Doppler effect, leading to a distribution of frequencies. This effect is more pronounced at higher temperatures, as atomic velocities increase.
