Line-broadening
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006640
The phenomenon where spectral lines in absorption or emission spectroscopy exhibit a finite width rather than being infinitely sharp. This broadening arises from factors such as the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, Doppler effects due to atomic motion, and collisions between particles. The width of a spectral line is often characterized by its full width at half maximum (FWHM).
