Half-width

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005077

The breadth of a spectral band or peak taken at the level where its intensity has fallen to half the maximum value, which is why it is also called the full width at half maximum, FWHM. Spectroscopists quote it in wavenumber, wavelength or frequency units to describe how sharp or broad an absorption or emission band is. For a Gaussian peak it equals about 2.355 times the standard deviation.
