Line width

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006610

The range of frequencies, wavelengths, or wavenumbers over which an absorption or emission spectral line extends. It quantifies the spread of energy associated with a spectroscopic transition. This width is commonly measured at half the maximum intensity of the spectral peak, known as the full width at half maximum (FWHM).
