Line width
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006978
The range of frequencies or wavelengths over which a spectral line absorbs or emits radiation, typically measured at half the maximum intensity. It reflects the broadening effects of physical processes such as Doppler shifts due to thermal motion, pressure broadening from molecular collisions, and natural broadening due to the uncertainty principle. Line width is expressed in units of frequency (Hertz) or wavelength (nanometers).
