Collision broadening
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004515
The widening of spectral lines in atmospheric absorption or emission spectra due to collisions between molecules. These collisions perturb the energy levels of the molecules, leading to a distribution of frequencies rather than a single sharp frequency. Collision broadening is dependent on pressure and temperature, increasing with higher pressure and lower temperature.
