Continuum absorption

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004649

The absorption of electromagnetic radiation by atmospheric gases over a broad range of wavelengths, rather than at discrete spectral lines. This phenomenon arises from the cumulative effects of numerous weak absorption lines, molecular collisions, and the wings of strong absorption bands. Water vapor is a primary contributor to continuum absorption in the infrared and microwave regions.
