Herzberg continuum
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006229
A region of weak, continuous absorption of ultraviolet radiation by molecular oxygen (O2) in the upper atmosphere. This absorption occurs primarily in the wavelength range from approximately 200 to 242 nanometers. The process contributes to the photodissociation of oxygen in the stratosphere and mesosphere, which is a key step in the formation of the ozone layer.
