Middle atmosphere

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007291

The region of Earth's atmosphere situated above the troposphere and below the thermosphere, encompassing the stratosphere and mesosphere. This layer extends from approximately 10-15 kilometers up to about 80-90 kilometers above the Earth's surface. It is characterized by temperature inversions in the stratosphere due to ozone absorption of ultraviolet radiation, and decreasing temperatures through the mesosphere.
