Ozone layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001975
A region of the stratosphere, roughly 15 to 35 km above the surface, where ozone is far more concentrated than elsewhere in the atmosphere. It absorbs most solar ultraviolet-B and nearly all ultraviolet-C radiation, which shields life at the surface. Total ozone is lowest near the equator, at about 260 Dobson units, and greatest in middle and high latitudes in late winter and spring.
An atmospheric layer that contains a high proportion of oxygen that exists as ozone. It acts as a filtering mechanism against incoming ultraviolet radiation. It is located between the troposphere and the stratosphere, around 9.5 to 12.5 miles (15 to 20 kilometers) above the earth's surface.
