Brewer-Dobson circulation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010408

A large-scale pattern of atmospheric circulation that transports air from the tropical troposphere into the stratosphere, where it then moves toward the poles before descending back into the troposphere. This slow, global-scale overturning is the primary mechanism for distributing ozone and other trace gases, such as water vapor and chlorofluorocarbons, throughout the stratosphere. A complete cycle of this circulation takes several years to transport an air parcel from the tropics to the high latitudes.
