Dobson spectrophotometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005089
A ground-based optical instrument designed to measure the total amount of ozone in a vertical column of the atmosphere. It works by comparing the intensity of two selected wavelengths of ultraviolet light from the sun, one of which is strongly absorbed by ozone and the other only weakly. The resulting measurement of total column ozone is expressed in Dobson Units (DU), with a typical global average value of about 300 DU.
