Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004526

A hypothetical vertical cylinder of air extending from the Earth's surface to a specified altitude or to the top of the atmosphere. Scientists use this concept to analyze the properties and budget of atmospheric constituents, such as water vapor, ozone, or pollutants, within a defined vertical space. The total amount of a substance in the column is expressed as its column density, measured in units like Dobson Units for ozone or kilograms per square meter for water vapor.
