Column abundance

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004527

The total number of molecules or mass of a specific atmospheric constituent integrated vertically through a column of the atmosphere, typically expressed per unit area. This measurement provides an indication of the total amount of a gas or aerosol present above a given location. It is a key parameter derived from remote sensing observations, such as those from satellites, to monitor atmospheric composition and track changes in greenhouse gases or pollutants.
