Thermohaline circulation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009610
A global-scale ocean circulation driven by differences in seawater density, which are controlled by temperature (thermo) and salinity (haline). Cold, salty water at high latitudes becomes dense and sinks, initiating deep ocean currents that move slowly across ocean basins. This circulation is a key mechanism for redistributing heat and nutrients throughout the world's oceans.
