Thermohaline convection
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009611
The vertical movement of water in the ocean driven by density differences caused by variations in both temperature and salinity. When surface waters become colder and saltier, they become denser and sink, initiating deep water formation. This process is a key component of the global thermohaline circulation.
