Level of free sink

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006928

The altitude in the atmosphere where a parcel of air, displaced downward from its equilibrium level, becomes colder and denser than its surroundings. Below this level, the parcel will continue to sink freely due to negative buoyancy. This concept is less commonly used than the level of free convection but describes the opposite process of free descent.
