Evaporative available potential energy
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005491
A measure of the potential energy available for a parcel of air to sink due to cooling from the evaporation of precipitation. It is calculated by integrating the negative buoyancy of a saturated, descending air parcel from a specified level to the surface. High values of this energy, expressed in joules per kilogram (J/kg), indicate a potential for strong downdrafts and damaging surface winds known as microbursts.
