Available potential energy

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003734

The portion of the total potential energy of an atmospheric or oceanic system that can be converted into kinetic energy through adiabatic redistribution of mass. This energy represents the maximum kinetic energy that could be generated by overturning an unstable fluid parcel to a stable configuration. It is a measure of the instability present in a fluid system.
