Potential energy
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008079
The energy held by an object or a parcel of air because of its position in a force field, specifically Earth's gravitational field. It is calculated as the product of the parcel's mass, the acceleration due to gravity, and its height above a reference level. As an air parcel rises, its potential energy increases, while its kinetic energy may decrease, illustrating the conversion between energy forms.
