Centripetal acceleration

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004235

The acceleration directed toward the center of curvature that is required to keep an object, such as an air parcel, moving along a curved path. In atmospheric dynamics, this acceleration is the result of an imbalance between the pressure gradient force and the Coriolis force. For a parcel in gradient wind balance, the centripetal acceleration is equal to V²/r, where V is the wind speed and r is the radius of the trajectory's curvature.
