Sink

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008899

A process or region that removes a substance, such as a gas or aerosol, from the atmosphere. Sinks can be physical, like the absorption of carbon dioxide by oceans, or chemical, such as the destruction of ozone by catalytic reactions. The balance between atmospheric sources and sinks determines the concentration and residence time of a particular atmospheric constituent.
