Sink

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010911

A process, activity, or medium that removes a chemical species from a specific part of the environment, such as the atmosphere. Sinks can be physical, like the absorption of gases into oceans, or chemical, involving reactions that transform the species into another substance. For example, the hydroxyl radical (OH) is a major chemical sink for many trace gases in the troposphere, while soil uptake acts as a physical sink for atmospheric pollutants.
