Receptor
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010010
A macromolecule, usually a protein, located on the cell surface or within the cytoplasm, that specifically binds to a signaling molecule, such as a hormone, neurotransmitter, or drug. This binding initiates a cellular response or cascade of events. The interaction between a ligand and its receptor is characterized by specificity and affinity.
