G protein-coupled receptor
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004737
A large family of transmembrane proteins that convert extracellular stimuli into intracellular signals through interaction with G proteins. Upon binding an external ligand, such as a hormone or neurotransmitter, the receptor undergoes a conformational change that activates a G protein on the cell's interior. These receptors possess a characteristic structure of seven alpha-helical segments that span the cell membrane.
