G protein

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004736

A family of proteins that bind guanine nucleotides and function as transducers in cellular signaling pathways. Activation occurs when a G protein exchanges a bound guanosine diphosphate (GDP) for a guanosine triphosphate (GTP), often triggered by an associated receptor. Heterotrimeric G proteins consist of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits, which dissociate upon activation to propagate the signal.
