Receiving water
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010009
A body of surface water, such as a river, lake, or ocean, into which wastewater, stormwater, or other effluent is discharged. The chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of this water body are assessed to determine its capacity to assimilate pollutants without undergoing unacceptable degradation. Regulatory standards, such as Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), are established to protect the designated uses of receiving waters.
