Mixing zone

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007434

A designated area in a body of water where a discharge of effluent is allowed to mix with the receiving water, and water quality standards may be temporarily exceeded. Within this zone, the concentration of pollutants gradually decreases due to dilution and dispersion. Regulatory agencies define the size and characteristics of mixing zones to minimize environmental impact.
