Cascade mixing

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001690

A process in surface analysis where multiple atomic collisions occur within a solid material due to the impact of an energetic primary ion. This leads to the displacement and mixing of atoms within the near-surface region. It is a fundamental phenomenon in techniques like secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and sputter depth profiling.
