Collision cascade
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002217
A series of atomic displacements initiated when an energetic incident particle strikes a target atom, transferring kinetic energy. This primary knock-on atom then displaces other atoms, leading to a cascade of subsequent collisions within the material. The process results in the creation of vacancies, interstitials, and atomic mixing in the near-surface region.
