Ionizing collision
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006128
An interaction between particles, such as atoms, molecules, or electrons, that results in the removal of one or more electrons from one of the participants, creating an ion. This process requires that the total kinetic energy of the colliding particles in the center-of-mass frame exceeds the ionization energy of the particle being ionized. Such collisions are the primary mechanism for creating ions in mass spectrometers and plasma environments.
