Ion/neutral species reaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006134

A chemical process involving a collision between an ion and a neutral atom or molecule, resulting in a change in the chemical nature of one or both participants. These reactions are studied extensively in mass spectrometry and plasma chemistry, where they govern the composition of the ionized gas. Common examples include charge transfer, proton transfer, and association reactions, which occur at rates determined by the collision frequency and reaction probability.
