Γ-cascade
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004786
A sequence of two or more gamma-ray emissions that occur in rapid succession from an excited atomic nucleus as it transitions to a lower energy state or its ground state. After an initial nuclear reaction or radioactive decay, the nucleus may be left in a highly excited state, which then de-excites through a series of discrete gamma-ray emissions. The energies and intensities of these gamma rays are characteristic of the specific nuclear transitions.
