1. The ecological entity exposed to the stressor.
2. In biochemistry: a specialized molecule in a cell that binds a specific chemical with high specificity and high affinity.
3. In exposure assessment: an organism that receives, may receive, or has received environmental exposure to a chemical.
4. The species, population, community, habitat, etc. that may be exposed to contaminants.
5. Ecological entity exposed to a stressor.
6. A population, community, or ecosystem that is exposed to a contaminant or other stressor.
7. The entity which is exposed to the stressor.
8. Ecology: a) The ecological entity exposed to the stressor. [EPA 1998, EPA 2005b]; b) In fate/transport modeling, the location where impacts are predicted. [EPA 2004]; c) In a non-modeling context, the entity which is exposed to an environmental stressor.
9. Molecular biology: A molecule on the surface of a cell that serves as a recognition or binding site for antigens, antibodies or other cellular or immunologic components.
10. A protein on the surface of a cell that serves as a binding site for substances outside the cell.
11. A molecule inside or on the surface of a cell that binds to a specific substance and causes a specific physiologic effect in the cell.
12. A molecule on the surface of a cell that serves as a recognition or binding site for antigens, antibodies or other cellular or immunologic components. [NIAID 2000]
