Greenhouse gases
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005028
Atmospheric gases that absorb and emit infrared radiation, trapping heat within the Earth's atmosphere and contributing to the greenhouse effect. These gases allow sunlight to pass through to the Earth's surface but prevent some of the outgoing thermal radiation from escaping into space. Common examples include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and water vapor, with their concentrations often measured in parts per million (ppm).
