Sink processes for trace gases

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008900

Mechanisms that remove trace gases from the atmosphere, thereby controlling their concentration and lifetime. These processes include chemical reactions, such as oxidation by hydroxyl radicals, photolysis by solar radiation, and physical removal through wet deposition (rainout and washout) and dry deposition onto surfaces. The efficiency of these sinks determines the atmospheric residence time of a gas, which can range from days for reactive species to centuries for inert compounds like chlorofluorocarbons.
