Washout

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010096

The removal of atmospheric aerosols, pollutants, and other particles by precipitation as it falls through the air. This process, a form of wet deposition, cleanses the air below the cloud base by capturing suspended materials in raindrops or snowflakes. The effectiveness of washout depends on factors like precipitation intensity, droplet size, and the physical and chemical properties of the particles being removed.
