Photodecomposition
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007907
The process by which a chemical compound is broken down into simpler molecules or atoms through the absorption of light energy. In the atmosphere, this process, also known as photolysis, is a primary mechanism for the removal of many trace gases and the initiation of complex chemical reaction chains. The rate of photodecomposition depends on the intensity and wavelength of incident radiation and the absorption properties of the molecule.
