First-order reactions

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005600

Chemical reactions in which the rate of reaction is directly proportional to the concentration of a single reactant. In atmospheric chemistry, many processes involving the removal or transformation of trace gases, such as the photolysis of ozone or the oxidation of certain pollutants, can be approximated as first-order reactions. Their rate constant has units of inverse time, such as s⁻¹.
