First-order closure

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005599

A simplification technique used in atmospheric modeling to represent turbulent fluxes of momentum, heat, and moisture in terms of mean gradients of these quantities. It assumes that turbulent transport is analogous to molecular diffusion, often using an eddy diffusivity coefficient. This approach is a common method for parameterizing sub-grid scale turbulence in numerical weather prediction models.
