Closure problem

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004402

The challenge of representing the effects of unresolved small-scale atmospheric processes on larger, resolved scales in numerical models. This requires parameterizing the statistical behavior of these sub-grid phenomena. For example, turbulent fluxes of heat and momentum must be modeled rather than explicitly calculated due to computational limitations.
