Photolysis
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007917
The chemical decomposition of a compound by the absorption of light energy, typically in the ultraviolet or visible spectrum. This process involves the breaking of chemical bonds within a molecule due to incident photons. In the atmosphere, photolysis is a fundamental process that initiates many chemical reactions, such as the breakdown of ozone and other trace gases.
