Photooxidation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007923

A chemical reaction in which a substance is oxidized through the absorption of light energy, often in the presence of an oxidizing agent like oxygen. This process is initiated by photons that provide the activation energy for the reaction. In the atmosphere, photooxidation is a key mechanism for the degradation of many pollutants and the formation of secondary aerosols and ozone.
