Chapman mechanism

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004254

A set of four chemical reactions proposed to explain the formation and destruction of ozone in the Earth's stratosphere, involving only oxygen species. It describes the photolysis of molecular oxygen to form atomic oxygen, which then reacts with molecular oxygen to produce ozone, followed by ozone photolysis and reaction with atomic oxygen. While foundational, this mechanism alone overestimates stratospheric ozone concentrations, necessitating the inclusion of catalytic cycles involving other trace gases.
