Chapman mechanism

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001877

A set of chemical reactions describing the formation and destruction of ozone in the Earth's stratosphere. It involves the photolysis of oxygen molecules by ultraviolet radiation to produce oxygen atoms, which then react with other oxygen molecules to form ozone. The mechanism also includes the photolysis of ozone and its reaction with oxygen atoms, maintaining a steady-state concentration of ozone in the absence of catalytic cycles.
