Ozone

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001972

  1. A molecule composed of three oxygen atoms (O3), found naturally in both the stratosphere and troposphere. Stratospheric ozone forms the ozone layer, which absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Tropospheric ozone is a pollutant that forms from reactions involving nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds.

  2. A form of oxygen, O_3. A powerful oxidizing agent that is considered a pollutant in the lower troposphere but an essential chemical in the stratosphere where it protects the earth from high-energy ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
