Organic nitrates

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007732

A class of chemical compounds containing a nitrate group bonded to an organic molecule, often formed in the atmosphere through the oxidation of volatile organic compounds in the presence of nitrogen oxides. These compounds can act as reservoirs for nitrogen oxides and contribute to ozone formation in the troposphere. Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is a well-known example of an atmospheric organic nitrate.
