Organic peroxides
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007733
A class of organic compounds containing the peroxide functional group (R-O-O-R'), formed in the atmosphere through the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These compounds are key intermediates in atmospheric chemistry, contributing to the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) and acting as reservoirs for radicals like the hydroperoxyl radical (HO2). Their low volatility means they can condense onto existing particles, contributing to aerosol mass and growth.
